A general guide to breeding lorikeets. Here we cover the more widely kept rainbow lorikeet also known as the swainsons.
Lorikeets are best kept one pair per aviary due to their aggressive nature, young can be the subject of attack in a colony situation and may have to be removed as soon as they fledge if they are left to be parent reared.
The lorikeet reaches Sexual maturity at 18 to 24 months.
Breeding is from July to December but some may breed year round if conditions are suitable. Nest-box internal dimensions approx. 200 mm square (or approx. 8 inches square) with an entrance hole approx. 55 - 60 mm (or approx. 2.25 - 2.5 inches)
Nest-box material: wood shavings, non toxic saw dust, easi bed etc..
2 eggs are laid with a 1-2 day interval, with an incubation period of 24 days Occasionally 3 eggs are laid but this is vary rare.
By the 20th day, the babies are covered in a dull grey down, eyes open at 14 days, they are fully feathered at 40 days & fledge at approx 8-9 weeks. If parent reared they will be fully independent 1-2 weeks later.
